Running for office isn’t about fitting the mold. It's about breaking it.

Donald Trump's re-election is a blow to democracy and a serious threat to our communities, but Michigan United Action remains resolute. Having mobilized tens of thousands of Michiganders this election season through canvass operations across Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and the Upper Peninsula, we will now work to turn this vast network of contacts into a powerful, organized base to combat the creeping fascism threatening our communities.

At Michigan United Action, we see Election Day as a punctuation mark, rather than the end of the story. The next four years will be a fight to save democracy. This means non-violent resistance and a robust plan to take governing power. We are clear-eyed that to affect real change we need members of the multiracial working class, not billionaires or authoritarian nationalists, represented at all levels of government. This means everyday people like you running for office and taking governing power. Running for office doesn't require a fancy resume or deep knowledge of the political system. We are looking for candidates who will make our democracy more reflective of Michiganders, particularly women, people of color, LGBTQ+, disabled, and working class people - hospitality workers, manufacturing industrialists, self employed, and even the unemployed.

This is where our Movement Politics Academy comes in. It's an in-depth training program led by experienced campaign managers, elected officials, and nationally recognized trainers, with a track record of developing successful movement candidates, some of whom currently hold office across Michigan. We will teach you how to think about building power, our worldview and analysis of politics, developing a base of supporters, running for office, and governing.

"I don't have a fancy resume. Can I still run for office?"

Yup. You are exactly who we're looking for.

"I don't know anything about politics. Can I still participate?"

Yes. Besides participating in the Movement Politics Academy, Michigan United Action is a political home where people can learn about how the system works and how we can transform it to work for all of us. Lots of our members come in completely new to politics.

Become a Relational Organizing Leader

Relational organizing is defined as “preparing & supporting people to bring the power within their existing relationships to affect change.” In actuality is it turning a contact into a conversation and then into a person empowered to create change where they live.
